UIA awards the 2026 Gold Medal to Eduardo Souto Moura
Casa da Arquitetura congratulates Eduardo Souto Moura on being awarded the 2026 Gold Medal by the International Union of Architects (UIA), highlighting his work and contribution to the excellence and international recognition of Portuguese architecture.
Established in 1984 by the UIA Council, the Gold Medal recognises exceptional achievements in the field of architecture. It is the most prestigious distinction awarded to an architect by fellow architects, based on nominations submitted by professional organisations from various countries. Over the years, the UIA Gold Medal has honoured leading figures in international architecture, including the architect Álvaro Siza.
Eduardo Souto Moura’s nomination was submitted by the Portuguese Architects’ Association and recognised by the international jury. According to the jury of the International Union of Architects, the award recognises a body of work characterised by intelligence, moderation and a sense of responsibility towards society, including the deposit of his archive at the Casa da Arquitetura in 2018, seen as a contribution to collective knowledge and to architecture as a cultural practice.
The award ceremony will take place at the Basilica of the Sagrada Família on 30 June, as part of the 2026 World Congress of Architects, which runs from 28 June to 2 July in Barcelona.
On 1 July, the Casa da Arquitetura and the Portuguese Architects’ Association are organising a discussion at the Disseny Hub Barcelona with Eduardo Souto Moura, Manuel Aires Mateus and Inês Lobo. On the same day, the Moco Museum Barcelona will host the opening of an exhibition dedicated to Souto Moura’s work, organised by the Casa da Arquitetura using the collection deposited at the institution.
The initiative will be followed by a celebration hosted by Casa da Arquitetura, the Portuguese Institute of Architects and the Portuguese Embassy in Spain.
