‘Caring for Life’ is the winning proposal for the 14th Ibero-American Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism in Brasília

The proposal is structured around the idea that architecture cares for life, drawing on a solid programme, clearly defined lines of work and a formal approach of high aesthetic value. The jury highlighted its conceptual focus, which positions architecture as a tool capable of responding to climate challenges, protecting health and ensuring liveability.

The evaluation committee also valued the strong institutional collaboration between Brazil and Portugal — including the involvement of the Brazilian government — as well as the proposal’s ability to integrate all Ibero-American countries, with particular attention to Portuguese-speaking nations.

Selected from five finalists, “Cuidar a Vida” was recognised for its dynamic nature and consistency with its own motto. The jury also highlighted the suitability of Brasília as the venue for the event, given its historical significance as a benchmark of 20th-century architecture and the institutional support available.

The Biennial is organised by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Agenda, in conjunction with the Higher Council of Architects’ Associations of Spain and with the support of the Arquia Foundation. The main exhibition will be itinerant in nature: although activities will be concentrated in November 2026, the exhibition will be extended over time to broaden public access and the cultural impact of the event.

The curatorial collective will be responsible for defining the conceptual content of this edition, with the aim of bringing architecture closer to society. It will also be responsible for organising the call for entries, the exhibition design, the installation, the publication of the catalogue and the parallel activities associated with the Biennial.
