Casa da Arquitetura mourns the death of Brazilian architect Eduardo de Almeida
The Guita and José Mindlin Brasiliana Library and IEB project in São Paulo, Brazil, developed in partnership with Rodrigo Mindlin Loeb, is the example of his work featured in this collection. This building, located at the University of São Paulo, is an important centre for the preservation and study of Brazilian culture, housing one of the country’s most significant bibliographic collections.
A leading figure in modern São Paulo architecture, Eduardo de Almeida built a remarkable career, marked by rigour, formal clarity and a demanding approach to construction systems. Having graduated in 1960 from the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism at the University of São Paulo (FAU/USP), where he also taught for over three decades, he played a decisive role in the training of several generations of architects.
Influenced by figures such as Frank Lloyd Wright and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and closely associated with the so-called “São Paulo school”, characterised by the figure of Vilanova Artigas, Eduardo de Almeida established his own distinctive style, based on modulation, the expressive use of concrete and brick, and a constant pursuit of precision and timelessness.
The Casa da Arquitetura commemorates Eduardo de Almeida as an indispensable figure in Brazilian architecture, whose work and thinking remain a fundamental reference on the international scene.
